Job Description
The Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering will lead a research intensive department, providing vision in concert with strategic planning for the department that aligns with the goals and strategic plan for the university.
The Chair will lead the department to advance and accelerate research, innovation and education and facilitate collaborations across the university as well as nationally and internationally.
The Chair will be responsible for departmental budget and strategic planning; personnel and facilities management; student cultivation and curriculum development; in addition to performing other duties as assigned.

01 Minimum Qualifications
(a)Possess an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field;
(b)Have a proven track record of teaching, scholarship, and leadership that warrants a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor;
(c)Have demonstrated successful administrative leadership experience in higher education such as the director of a research center or research institute, chair/head of an academic department, or comparable position with responsibilities that included budgets, strategic planning, personnel management, performance reviews, and promotion and tenure decisions;
d)Have familiarized with higher education systems.

Founded in July 2013, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at SUSTech currently has 25 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, with a plan to grow into a size of 40 faculty in the next few years. The department has about 120 undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students. The MSE program aims to equip students with knowledge, methods and tools for engaging in the frontier research and development of new materials. In addition to education of science and engineering knowledge, the MSE program also emphasizes on cultivating students with intuition of innovation, spirit of team work, and skills of leadership.
The department engages in a broad scope of advanced materials research, including electronic information materials, energy and environmental materials, biological and medical materials, functional materials, as well as advanced materials processing and manufacturing. The MSE program at SUSTech plays a leading role in the frontiers of materials research; the national strategic development plan in materials; and the R&D needs of the local industries in the Pearl River Delta and Shenzhen municipality.
SUSTech provides a world-class research infrastructure to support cutting-edge research, including electron microscope imaging center, micro and nanofabrication facility, materials characterization center, biosciences center, supercomputing platform, and the state-of-the-art machine shop.
